A monitor emits light. Paper reflects it. No amount of calibration bridges that gap without a physical proof. Here is how professional colour proofing actually works.
Two completely different physics
Your screen produces colour by mixing red, green and blue light. Ink on paper produces colour by absorbing light and reflecting what remains. The gamut of a backlit display is wider and brighter than any ink set on any paper. That vivid cobalt on your monitor may simply not exist on uncoated stock. A calibrated monitor helps you predict the outcome. It never shows it.
Soft proofs, hard proofs and wet proofs
A soft proof is a screen simulation using the printer's colour profile. It is useful for catching gross errors. A hard proof is a physical print made on a calibrated proofing device to a certified standard. It is the contract between designer and printer. A wet proof is printed on the actual press with the actual ink on the actual paper. It is the truth, and for fine art work it is the only proof worth signing.
- Soft proof: free, fast, indicative only
- Hard proof: certified, accurate to within a few Delta E, the standard for approval
- Wet proof: the final paper and press, essential for critical colour work
The uncoated paper challenge
Uncoated luxury stocks absorb ink. Dots spread, blacks lose density and saturated colours flatten. Managing this requires a paper specific profile, adjusted total ink limits and often a deliberate increase in contrast at the file stage. Done well, the result is a soft, painterly reproduction that coated paper cannot match. Done carelessly, it is muddy.
