Tipping In Fine Art Plates: The Lost Craft of Hand Assembled Books
Automated machines cannot replicate human precision.

A tipped in plate is a separately printed image glued by hand into the finished book. It is slow, it is precise and it transforms a printed page into an object the reader stops to touch.
What tipping in means
To tip in is to attach a separate leaf to a page along one narrow edge with a fine line of adhesive. The technique was once how every colour plate entered a book, printed on a different paper from the text. Today it survives as a deliberate luxury: a photograph on fine art paper, a facsimile document or a signed sheet, set into the page by hand.
Why it still matters
A tipped in plate has a physical edge. The reader feels it before seeing it, lifts it slightly and understands that someone placed it there. On a limited edition this single gesture distinguishes the book from anything a machine could produce alone. It also allows the plate to be printed on a completely different stock, a heavy cotton paper for instance, within a text block of lighter wove.

Vellum inserts and tactile overlays
Translucent vellum or tracing sheets bound or tipped over a plate add a moment of reveal. Printed with a caption or a line drawing, the overlay registers with the image beneath. Textured overlays, embossed sheets and die cut windows work in the same way. Each is placed by hand, each is checked by eye.

Hand work is priced by the operation, so clarity at specification stage keeps it efficient.
- Decide the exact page and position of every insert
- Allow a 5 millimetre adhesive margin on the tipped edge
- Print plates with 3 millimetre bleed and trim after mounting where possible
- Runs of 25 to 300 suit hand assembly best
