Smyth Sewn versus PUR Glue: How to Tell if Your Book Will Last a Century
Nothing destroys a brand faster than a page falling into the lap of a key client.

Two books can look identical on the shelf and behave completely differently in the hand. The binding decides whether your edition survives a decade or a single reading.
What actually holds a book together
A Smyth sewn book is made of folded sections, each stitched through the fold with thread and then sewn to its neighbours. The pages are physically locked to one another before any glue is applied. A PUR bound book is a stack of single leaves with the spine edge ground flat and coated in polyurethane reactive adhesive. The glue is the only thing holding the pages in.
PUR is a good adhesive. It is flexible, strong and far superior to the older hot melt glues that cracked in cold rooms. But glue is glue. Thread is structure.
The lay flat test
Open a sewn book to the centre and place it on a table. It stays open, the gutter is fully visible and images running across the spread are uninterrupted. Do the same with a PUR bound book and it fights you. Photography books, cookbooks, architecture monographs and anything with double page spreads should be sewn. There is no serious debate on this point.
Archival durability
Conservation libraries specify sewn bindings because the failure mode is gentle. A sewn book that is abused might loosen a section. A glued book that is abused loses pages one at a time, usually starting with the ones the reader turns to most. For a corporate history, a limited edition or a catalogue raisonné intended to sit in a collection for fifty years, sewing is the only responsible choice.

- Look at the top of the spine: sewn books show gathered folded sections
- Open to the centre of a section: sewn books show thread in the fold
- Flex the spine: sewn books curve, glued books hinge
