The finest recycled and certified papers now outperform virgin stocks in feel and print quality. Here is how to specify a genuinely sustainable premium edition without a single visible sacrifice.

The end of the trade off

A decade ago recycled paper meant grey, speckled and rough. That is no longer true. Mills across Europe now produce 100 percent recycled uncoated stocks with the bulk, opacity and surface of the best virgin papers. Several of the papers in our standard range are recycled, and clients rarely identify which ones without being told.

Certified fibre

FSC certification guarantees that fibre comes from responsibly managed forests or verified recycled sources, with a chain of custody through every stage of production. Grosvenor and Guild holds chain of custody certification, which means your book can carry the FSC mark on its colophon. For brands with published sustainability commitments this is increasingly a requirement rather than a preference.

  • FSC Recycled: 100 percent post consumer fibre
  • FSC Mix: a blend of certified virgin and recycled fibre
  • Carbon balanced options available on selected stocks

Covers without animal leather

Plant based and recycled leather alternatives have matured into materials that foil, deboss and age well. Options made from apple waste, cork and recycled fibre offer a warm, matte surface that suits contemporary luxury. Natural cotton and linen book cloths remain the most sustainable choice of all and have been for a century.

Inks, glues and process

Vegetable oil based inks have largely replaced mineral oil inks in quality book production. Sewn bindings use less adhesive than glued ones. Short runs eliminate the pulped overstock that remains the industry's largest hidden waste. The most sustainable book is the one that is made well, made in the right quantity and kept for a lifetime.

  • Specify FSC Recycled or FSC Mix uncoated stock
  • Choose cotton or linen cloth, or a plant based leather alternative
  • Sew the binding to reduce adhesive
  • Print the quantity you will sell
