Edge decoration has moved from the antiquarian shelf to the front of every bookshop window. Here is how gilding, spraying and stencilling work, and which suits your edition.
Why edges matter now
Walk into any British bookshop and count the sprayed edges on the front table. Special editions with coloured or patterned page edges have become one of the most reliable drivers of premium hardback sales in the UK. The reason is simple. The edge is visible when the book is closed, stacked or photographed, and it signals that someone cared about the whole object.
Foil edge gilding
Traditional gilding applies gold or coloured foil to the trimmed edges of the text block under heat and pressure. The result is a smooth metallic surface that catches light. Gilding suits sewn hardbacks on smooth or lightly textured stocks. It is the most formal edge treatment and pairs naturally with leather, buckram and blind debossing.

Sprayed and stencilled edges
Spraying applies pigment to the edges with an airbrush. A single solid colour is the most common treatment. Stencilling adds a repeating pattern, a motif or even a full illustration across the fore edge. Sprayed edges work on both hardbacks and paperbacks and suit contemporary fiction, illustrated books and brand publications equally well.
Fore edge painting
The rarest treatment is the painted fore edge: an image that appears only when the pages are fanned. Historically done by hand, it can now be reproduced with precision printing on the fanned block. It is a genuine conversation piece and suits very small runs of collector editions.
