Ribbons, Headbands, and Endpapers: The Details That Define Royalty
God is in the details, but prestige is in the headband.

The small components of a hardback cost pennies and communicate everything. A guide to specifying ribbons, headbands and endpapers so the whole book speaks with one voice.
The details a collector checks first
Watch an experienced book buyer pick up a hardback. They open the front board and look at the endpaper. They glance at the top of the spine for the headband. They let the ribbon fall. In four seconds they have judged the publisher. These components are inexpensive. Their absence, or their mismatch, is expensive.
Ribbon markers
A ribbon marker is a length of woven ribbon glued into the spine before the case is applied. Satin polyester is standard. Woven silk or grosgrain in a colour drawn from the cover adds texture and weight. Two ribbons in contrasting colours signal a reference book of substance. The ribbon should extend 30 to 40 millimetres below the tail of the block and be cut cleanly on the diagonal.

Headbands and tailbands
The small striped band at the head and tail of the spine began as a structural element and survives as a signal of quality. Modern headbands are woven cotton or silk in single or dual colours. A dual colour headband matched to the cloth and the ribbon is the mark of a specification that was considered as a whole.
Endpapers
Endpapers join the text block to the case and are the first surface seen on opening. Plain coloured endpapers in a heavy uncoated stock such as Colorplan are the classic choice. Printed endpapers with a pattern, a map, an archive photograph or a repeat of the cover motif turn a functional component into a moment of delight.
