Why Paper Weight is Only Ten Percent of the Luxury Equation
Thickness is not luxury. Grain, bulk, opacity, and tactile drag are what matter.

Clients often ask for heavier paper when what they want is better paper. Understanding grain, bulk and surface will improve your book more than any number on a spec sheet.
The gsm obsession
Grams per square metre measures how much a sheet weighs. It says nothing about how thick it is, how opaque it is, how it folds or how it feels. A 130gsm coated silk can be thinner and slicker than a 100gsm uncoated wove. Specifying paper by weight alone is like specifying wine by the size of the bottle.
Bulk: the ratio that matters
Bulk is the ratio of thickness to weight. A high bulk paper is thick for its weight, which gives a book a satisfying spine width and a soft, cushioned feel without making it heavy to hold. Munken and similar Scandinavian book wove papers achieve bulk ratios of 1.5 to 2.0, which is why a 300 page novel on Munken Print Cream feels substantial in the hand while a 300 page book on coated stock feels thin and dense.
- Bulk 1.0 to 1.2: coated art papers, dense and smooth
- Bulk 1.3 to 1.5: quality uncoated offset papers
- Bulk 1.6 to 2.0: dedicated book wove papers with visible fibre
Opacity, grain and drag
Opacity determines whether the reader sees the reverse page bleeding through. For text on uncoated stock, aim for 94 percent or higher. Grain direction determines how a page turns. Grain must run parallel to the spine or the pages will resist and the book will never lie comfortably. Drag is the subtle friction of the surface against the fingertip. Felt finished and cotton papers have it. Coated papers do not.
Cotton rag and fine art reproduction
For fine art and photography, cotton content papers deliver the deepest matte blacks and the widest tonal range on uncoated surfaces. They cost more, they require careful ink management, and they produce reproductions that feel like prints rather than pages. For a gallery catalogue or a photographer's monograph they are frequently worth every penny.
