A slipcase protects. A clamshell box performs. Here is how the two are built, what they cost and when each earns its place in a premium edition.

Packaging is part of the book

The moment a client lifts the lid is the moment the price is justified. For collector editions above 150 pounds, the box is not an accessory. It is a chapter of the experience, and it is usually the first thing photographed and shared.

The slipcase

A slipcase is an open ended sleeve of greyboard covered in cloth or printed paper. The book slides in with its spine exposed. It is the classic protective housing for a clothbound hardback and it adds shelf presence at modest cost. A well made slipcase has a thumb notch, a snug but not tight fit and a lining that will not scuff the book's cloth.

  • Board thickness of 2 to 3 millimetres
  • Cloth matched or contrasted to the book case
  • Optional foil blocking on the spine face

The clamshell box

A clamshell, also called a solander box, is a hinged two part case that closes fully around the book. Open it and the book is presented flat, often in a fitted recess. It is the housing used by museums and rare book libraries, and it is the treatment we recommend for editions where the unboxing itself is the marketing.

Inside, the options multiply: a velvet or suede lined well, a ribbon pull that lifts the book from the recess, a compartment for a print or certificate, and a magnetic or ribbon tie closure.

  • Full cloth or leather covering with foil to the lid
  • Fitted recess cut to the book's exact dimensions
  • Velvet lining in a colour drawn from the endpapers
  • Ribbon pull mechanism for effortless removal

Cost and run length

Slipcases are practical from 50 copies upward. Clamshell boxes are hand assembled and generally suit runs of 25 to 250. On a deluxe tier priced at 300 pounds or more, a clamshell typically represents less than a tenth of the retail price and a far larger share of the perceived value.
